Random Anime Theatre II

Just a short one, as we took in two titles over New Year's Day:

Eight Clouds Rising: City boy bonds with rural priest boy in this dull, forgettable supernatural OAV drama. About the best thing you could say is that the animation was nice. There's some extensive referencing of Japanese mythology - most of which I got - which is predictably twisted to the anime's bizarre ends.

Landlock: Sadly, another dull OAV series, this time dealing with an eeeevil technological dictatorship trying to wipe out a divine bloodline... what's that you say? They're trying to steal their power instead? What a shocking plot twist! I certainly haven't seen that dozens of times before! Sarcasm aside, the protagonists largely bumble about aimlessly, and the only thing the 'hero' seems to do is have bright, technicolor deux ex machina moments that save their bacon, being utterly incapable of doing anything else save whining and flailing. The character and mecha designs by Masamune Shirow are nice to see the first time they pop on screen, even though the animation doesn't do much for them. At least the cover of the DVD is pretty, I suppose.

The stack seems to have some more promising titles, though, so hopefully the next viewing will turn out better.
